Geosynthetics for Soil Reinforcement - 2001 Buchanan Lecture by Robert D. Holtz

The Spencer J. Buchanan Lecture Series on the GeoChannel is presented by the Geo-Institute of ASCE. For more information about the Geo-Institute: http://www.asce.org/geotechnical-engi... The Ninth Spencer J. Buchanan Lecture in the Department of Civil Engineering at Texas A&M University was given by Professor Robert D. Holtz on 9 November 2001. "Geosynthetics for Soil Reinforcement" Abstract: This lecture introduces geosynthetic materials and briefly describes their types and manufacture, functions and applications, properties and tests, design, selection, and specifications. Geosynthetics for soil reinforcement are then discussed in some details, with specific applications to embankments on soft foundations, steep slopes, and for the backfills of retaining walls and abutments. Emphasis is on the materials properties of the geosynthetics required for design and construction. About Robert D. Holtz: Professor Robert D. Holtz received a B.S. and M.S. degree in civil engineering from the University of Minnesota in 1960 and 1962 respectively. After a special program in Soil mechanics at Harvard University in 1966, he obtained a PhD degree from Northwestern University in 1970. He then worked as a research engineer at the Swedish Geotechnical Institute in Stockholm until 1973 at which time he joined the civil engineering faculty at Purdue University where he became full professor in 1985. In 1988, he moved to the University of Washington in Seattle where he is Professor of Civil Engineering. He is the author, co-author, or editor of 21 books mostly on geosynthetics and soil improvement. He is an active consultant with projects in France, Italy and the USA. He has delivered the Kersten Lecture, the Cross-Canada Lecture, and the Ardaman Lecture. He was the President of the North American Geosynthetics Society from 1981 to 1983 and is currently the President of the ASCE Geo-Institute.
