The moment I saw the listing, I couldn't look away. This old house looked exactly like the home of my great-grandparents — the color, the shape, the feeling of a world that no longer exists. I decided to buy it no matter what. For $330, it was mine. From the outside, it seemed almost untouched. The roof had no holes. The paint — a color I actually loved — was still there. But one window was open. Which meant someone had already been inside before me. The only residents I could confirm? An anthill, right there under the sill. Inside, time had stopped. A beautiful chandelier still hung in the main room. A wardrobe stood with strange inscriptions carved on the inside walls — why would someone write on the inside of a wardrobe? Was it a child locked in there as punishment? A bas-relief of "Mother and Child" hung on its hook. A package of bronze paint from the Latvian SSR sat untouched on a shelf. The attic was a genuine historical museum: horse harness, a huge spool of thread, a colander, tin plates, a mysterious wooden contraption that made no sense with one piece — and still made no sense after finding the second. A trunk that had traveled a century of life, now finally fallen apart. Then came the barn. Collapsed roof held up by a single beam. The smell of manure still in the air. Fallen birch trees through the walls. And there, in the ruins — a coffin. With its lid. Lying in the barn of a house I just bought.
