Ep. 68: Burnout Is a Design Problem, Not a Willpower Problem
The most expensive thing you can do as a leader is perform an institutional identity that conflicts with your biological reality. Sunday morning, my mind was locked in for a long-distance run. My WHOOP data showed a 93% recovery score. The intention was real. But as I bent over to put on my socks, my lower back gave out entirely. I ended up on the floor with an ice pack. My professional identity immediately started negotiating: “You’re already dressed. You have a training schedule. Push through.” We run this exact negotiation every day in professional services. We treat shoulder tightness, a weight in the chest, or deep exhaustion as noise to be suppressed. We call it discipline. In reality, those are precise, protective, early-warning data points. And as Neha Sangwan, M.D. notes, when the mind and body disagree, the body wins every time. True resilience is not about how much pressure your nervous system can absorb before it breaks. It is an environmental design problem. Decades of research by Christina Maslach and Michael Leiter prove that six specific structural conditions - from workload asymmetry to a lack of autonomy - force human systems into systemic failure. Stop coaching your team to "manage their energy" to prove their loyalty. Start engineering conditions that don't deplete them. ▶️ Watch & Listen to this Episode Here! 🔗 Website: https://lnkd.in/gegEtm8M 🍎 Apple: https://lnkd.in/g4j6E7J7 🎧 Spotify: https://lnkd.in/eJfvj9d3? 📺 YouTube: https://lnkd.in/gTVg9aQT #NeuroscienceOfLeadership #BurnoutPrevention #CorporateCulture #DataDrivenLeadership #LeadershipDevelopment #FounderBurnout -- Improve your leadership development skills with practical, actionable lessons.
