ALPS to OCEAN (302km) In a Day
Alps to Ocean - In a Day 302km | 2263m The clear & calm autumn weather of April 1 made perfect conditions for riding Alps to Ocean in a day. This was a ride I've had in mind for a while, so with the daylight hours quickly shortening and the temps cooling this felt like the last chance until spring. When an opportunity for a ride to Tekapo presented, I decided to go for it. A2O has two starts: from Aoraki Mt Cook (with heli flight over the Tasman River) or from Tekapo. I started from the latter, but also rode via Braemar Road in order to join the original route at Lake Pukaki sooner, which added more distance and elevation. Apart from the expected cold start, it was a great day out, made more fun (and faster!) with the company of my mate Robin for the second half. Started 5am and finished in Oamaru just after 9.30pm.
