Memory as a Form of Justice | Panel 2 | Kherson Region on the Frontier
“Memory as a Form of Justice” — the second panel of the conference “Kherson Region on the Frontier: Steppe, River, Fortress.” At the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the archiving of war crimes was the primary means of preserving memory. As the nature of this prolonged war became clearer, both the forms of remembrance and the demand for different modes of memory, as well as the nature of testimonies and witnesses, have evolved. Yet one fundamental thing has not changed: the demand for justice. Memory — as a space of holding and preservation, as resistance to erasure and destruction, as defiance against silence — has emerged as an essential form of justice. How have remembrance and memory politics changed after 2022? How does collective memory function during war? And can memory itself become a form of justice? The panel featured: Mykola Homaniuk — sociologist and researcher of memory policies; Serhii Diachenko — museum specialist, local historian, and architect (Kherson); Svitlana Osipchuk — Director of the Museum of War Childhood in Ukraine. The discussion was moderated by Anastasiia Platonova. The conference “Kherson Region on the Frontier: Steppe, River, Fortress” was held in cooperation with the Art Arsenal Community NGO and the Frontier Institute, with the support of the ERSTE Foundation. ERSTE Foundation creates social, economic, and cultural infrastructure and innovation for a changing Europe. We empower initiatives for change and contribute to civil society development and regional progression.
