It inhabits all types of woodland, and large flocks often descend on agricultural fields after sowing, causing significant damage. It is a highly prized bird for its meat. The Stock Dove, Columba oenas, also known as the wood pigeon, is a rare bird due to the gradual disappearance of tall trees, whose cavities it uses for nesting. The Stock Dove is an endangered species; its numbers are continually declining, and both hunting and capture are prohibited. Its flight is slower and less agile than that of the pigeon and the wood pigeon, and often, during the migration period, all three species can fly together in mixed flocks. The main differences are size: the wood pigeon is significantly larger than the stock dove and the pigeon. The wood pigeon and the wood pigeon share the same eye and beak color, with their beaks tinged with red and yellow and their eyes black, while the pigeon has a brown beak and orange eyes. The pigeon has a white rump and two black stripes on its wings; the stock dove, however, does not have a white rump and has two very short black bars on its wings. The underside of the pigeon's wingspan is white, while it is dark in the wood pigeon and the wood pigeon.
