In this video, I'll show you the three mistakes that are making your pentatonic scale sound square and stiff, and the step-by-step process to solve each one in practice, playing over an A minor backing track. The first point is bends. Most guitarists know how to bend, but they do it on the wrong fret, on the wrong string, and that ruins the solo. I'll show you exactly which one-tone bends work in each pentatonic scale shape, always using the third finger, so you can stop making mistakes and start sounding in tune and musical. Next comes the second mistake, which is not knowing how to expand the pentatonic scale. Here I teach the concept I call the giant pentatonic scale, dividing the scale into two strings and octaving the shapes, so you can use the entire guitar neck with a single scale pattern and see the pentatonic scale as a whole, not in separate boxes. And the third mistake, which is where most guitarists get stuck: thinking that improvisation is just about picking a scale and playing it. It doesn't work that way. The secret lies in phrasing, that is, learning to play beautiful phrases within the scale, learning music by ear. I take a ready-made phrase and show you how to connect everything, the right bends, the expanded scale and the phrase, so you can hear in practice how the pentatonic scale stops sounding basic and comes to life.
