How Carpet Is Recycled to Divert Plastic From Landfills | Eastman

When it comes to recycling, we think of bottles and plastic bags. But what about carpet? What happens to the 3 billion pounds of carpet found in landfills every year? While carpets provide warmth for millions of people around the world, carpet is also one of the top 10 materials found in landfills. Once tossed out, it can sit for centuries without breaking down. For years, carpet was hard to recycle due to its complexity — including different types of fibers, plastics and even the glues required to keep it together. But there is good news. Post-consumer carpet can now be recycled through Eastman’s carbon renewal technology and converted into new materials. We partnered with Circular Polymers and the Carpet America Recovery Effort to begin recycling one of the most problematic waste materials in the United States. With these partnerships, we can divert millions of pounds of carpet from landfills each year. Our carbon renewal technology is currently operating at commercial-scale capacity, and we are actively pursuing additional feedstock opportunities to realize a material impact as quickly as possible.
