Hüseyin Rahmi Gürpınar was born in Istanbul on August 17, 1864. The son of Sultan's aide-de-camp Mehmet Sait Pasha, Hüseyin Rahmi was sent to his father in Crete after his mother's death when he was three years old. He started primary school, but after his father remarried, he was sent back to Istanbul at the age of six to live with his grandmother and continued his education there. Hüseyin Rahmi, who studied at Yakubağa School, Mahmudiye Secondary School, and the preparatory school, entered the School of Civil Administration (Mekteb-i Mülkiye) under the patronage of historian Abdurrahman Şeref Bey (1878). While in the second year of school, Hüseyin Rahmi suffered a serious illness and interrupted his studies (1880). For a short time, Hüseyin Rahmi worked as a clerk in the Criminal Department of the Ministry of Justice and as an assistant judge in the Commercial Court, trying to earn a living with his pen. Starting to write for the Tercüman-ı Hakikat newspaper in 1887, Hüseyin Rahmi subsequently worked as a translator and writer for the İkdam and Sabah newspapers. During the Second Constitutional Era, he published a newspaper called Boşboğaz ve Güllâbi, which lasted for 37 issues. The Millet newspaper, which he published together with İbrahim Hilmi Bey, was also short-lived. He was among the writers of the Türk Kadın Yolu magazine, which was published between 1925 and 1927.[1] He later published his works in the İkdam, Söz, Zaman, Vakit, Son Posta, Milliyet and Cumhuriyet newspapers. Hüseyin Rahmi, who served as a Member of Parliament for Kütahya in the 5th and 6th terms of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, died on March 8, 1944, in his mansion on Heybeliada, where he spent the last thirty-one years of his life, and was buried in the Abbas Pasha Cemetery there. He authored 54 works in the genres of short stories, plays, and novels.
