Restoring Garlic's Glory in Tegal Regency Toewel Village, now known as Tuwel, in Bojong District, Tegal Regency, is one of Indonesia's leading garlic-producing regions. At its peak, Tuwel earned the nickname "Hajj Village," as many of the garlic farmers there had departed for the Holy Land of Mecca. After a period of decline, around 2016, Bank Indonesia initiated a small-scale garlic cultivation initiative, leading Tuwel Village to regain its reputation as a garlic producer until the COVID-19 pandemic once again eclipsed its reputation. In 2025, approximately five years after the outbreak, the Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture, through the Central Java Agricultural Modernization Implementation Center, began re-initiating garlic cultivation in Tuwel Village, not only for consumption but also as a source of superior seeds for the future. To strengthen this reinitiation, the Central Java BRMP, together with the Tegal Regency Agriculture Office, the Indonesian Garlic Seed Association (ASBATI), cooperative farmers from Tuwel Village, and of course, Bank Indonesia, conducted the second phase of joint garlic planting. This planting served as a strong symbol of garlic's return to the region that has made its name, and it is hoped that this time, it will be even stronger thanks to the collaborative efforts of all relevant stakeholders. #garlic #BRMPJateng #ModiSquad
