We talk about water in the soil and its availability to plants. We analyze what forms of water exist in the soil, why some of the moisture is unavailable to the root system, and how this affects the yield and work of an agronomist. We discuss key water constants: total water capacity, lowest field water capacity, and wilting moisture of plants, and we also explain where the optimal range of available moisture for crops is. We also analyze the water properties of soils: water permeability, water-lifting and water-holding capacity. We explain why sandy and clay soils work differently with moisture, how the grain size composition affects the provision of plants with water. A separate block is devoted to water balance and climate change: an increase in intense rainfall, changes in the precipitation regime, increased evaporation, and their impact on the moisture supply of crops in Ukraine.
