FEATURED WATCHES Rolex Daytona Ref. 126500 Black Dial & White Dial Rolex released a brand-new generation of Daytonas in 2023, replacing the first ceramic bezel 1165XX generation. With the new 1265XX Daytonas, the first in-house Rolex chronograph movement, caliber 4130, was discontinued and replaced with the caliber 4131. This newer movement has a more efficient Chronergy Escapement and a rotor with more ball bearings. However, the already substantial 72-hour power reserve remains the same. The movement also has a new Côtes de Genève Rolex decoration, a design element we can now see via the exhibition case back on the platinum models—the first and only in the Rolex sports watch series to have a sapphire case back. The movement isn’t the only upgrade Rolex made to the series. The ceramic bezel is now trimmed in metal to match the rest of the watch. So, the white gold model is trimmed in white gold, the stainless steel model is trimmed in steel, and so on. While it looks striking, it also protects the bezel from getting dinged and chipped. The stainless steel ref. 126500 is still 40mm and is still available with either a black or white dial with red “DAYTONA” text like the duo of watches we unboxed in this week’s episode of “What’s in the Box.” However, the case has been slightly slimmed down to about 11.9mm thick. Outwardly, Rolex has made several noteworthy upgrades to the new Daytonas that give the watch a slightly different and more refined aesthetic. For example, the rings surrounding the sub-dials are thinner and somewhat resemble the vintage “Big Eye” chronograph. Additionally, the hour markers are slightly smaller and thinner—changes that make the dial appear cleaner. Like previous models, the dial is still decorated with Rolex’s proprietary “Chromalight,” a long-lasting luminescent material that glows bright blue in the dark and is crisp white in the light. This material is marketed as boasting 8 hours of continuous luminescence and is certainly striking, day or night.
