In this BADN Coffee Catch-Up session, we are joined by Emma Green, Senior Dental Nurse within the North Wales Community Dental Service and BADN Board of Representatives Prison Dental Nurse Representative, for an insightful and thought-provoking session on prison dental nursing. Emma explores the unique role of dental nurses working within custodial settings and the contribution they make to oral health, general health, wellbeing and rehabilitation. The session highlights the oral health inequalities experienced by people in custody, the practical and operational realities of delivering dental care in a secure environment, and the importance of trauma-informed and person-centred care. This presentation also considers the wider role of prison dental nurses within multidisciplinary healthcare teams, including communication, oral health education, skill mix, patient support, safeguarding awareness, staff wellbeing and professional advocacy.
