Лекция №17. КРЫМСКАЯ СКИФИЯ: III в. до н. э. - III в. н. э.
After the disappearance of Great Scythia at the end of the 4th century BC, the so-called Late Scythian archaeological culture spread across a significant portion of the Crimean Peninsula, lasting for over six centuries. According to archaeological data, these people were builders of fortresses and settlements, farmers and herders, warriors and traders, occupying the territory of the Crimean foothills between the Bosporan Kingdom and Tauric Chersonesos. The specific geographical location determined the mixed nature of the Late Scythian culture, which at various stages incorporated Hellenic, Celtic, Thracian, and Sarmatian features. The most famous monument of the Late Scythians is Scythian Neapolis. However, many other interesting and important sites are also known and studied: the Ak-Kaya fortress, the Kara-Tau settlement, Ust-Alminsky, and many other necropolises, mountain sanctuaries, and burial mounds. What are the main hypotheses regarding the origins of Late Scythian culture in Crimea? What were the largest Late Scythian fortresses of Ak-Kaya and Scythian Neapolis? Who were the kings Argot and Skilurus, and what role did they play in the history of Crimea and the Northern Black Sea region? What is the rich Ust-Alma necropolis in southwestern Crimea like? What other Late Scythian sites have been discovered in the Crimean foothills, and what do the latest research findings tell us? This and more will be covered in the latest lecture of the winter lecture series of the "Open Archaeology" project. Lecturer: Yuri ZAITSEV, PhD in History, Director of the Scythian Neapolis Historical and Archaeological Museum-Reserve, and Head of the Foothill Archaeological Expedition.
