Although he does not yet have a driver's license, he steals a car and breaks through a barrier. This daring venture leads him to find his stepfather Jack Hatch (John Schneider) trapped under a car. He also finds his grandmother and is able to bring her to safety; she was only slightly injured. Jack dislocated his arm but was otherwise unharmed. Jack and Dan now set out together to search for Dan's mother Laura (Lori Hallier). She is also already looking for her two sons and her husband in front of their collapsed house.
