Ave Maria (Hail Mary) is one of the most beloved prayers in all of Christianity. For centuries it has been prayed and sung in the sacred Latin of the Church, lifting hearts to God through Mary, the Mother of Jesus. But before Latin, before centuries of liturgy and tradition, Mary herself as a young Hebrew woman in Nazareth would have spoken Aramaic, the everyday language of her world. In this arrangement, the Ave Maria is brought to life in two languages: ✨ Aramaic — presented in Syriac script and Latin transliteration, echoing the tongue Mary herself would have known. ✨ Latin — the timeless liturgical language of the Church, carrying this prayer across generations and continents. Aramaic was the language of Galilee in the first century, spoken by ordinary people in daily life. Mary’s “yes” to God, her Magnificat, and her prayers would all have risen first in Aramaic. To hear the Hail Mary in Aramaic is to step closer to the world she lived in, to touch the very sounds that may have passed her lips. Latin, in turn, became the sacred language of the Church, carrying this prayer in chant, song, and devotion for centuries.
