Politicians like Peter Altmaier are hailing it as the energy source of the future: green hydrogen, the new magic gas against climate change. Billions are being invested nationwide in new gas pipelines, pipelines, and liquefied natural gas terminals – with the promise that climate-neutral gas will flow through the pipelines in the future. Critics are skeptical: green hydrogen will be scarce and expensive – the gas industry is merely using it as an excuse to lock in its fossil gas business for decades.
