Blog and website: www.skillcult.com/blog Instagram and Facebook @SkillCult Time to plant out my leek seedlings. I put them 6 inches apart in rows 12 inches apart. Once they become established, I'll smooth over the bed, weed it and start putting manure and food on top. Through the next 10 months or so, they will be fed and watered as I remove any that don't meet my criteria for a good Bulgarian Giant leek. I want large diameter, tall, straight leeks with the leaves tightly clasped at the top. The also have to survive the winter freezes and snows without a hitch. The best few will be moved to an area to go to seed. and by next fall I should have the seed for sale. I have saved a number of generations of this seed trying to refine it to get the traits I want. The next step may be to take what I have and cross it with some other similar varieties to create more vigor and possibly more hardiness. I didn't dig the bed or dig in any manure, because I rarely do that in any of my beds. I'm not a srict no till/ no dig gardener, but I avoid it for the most part. It's a lot less work and a lot more flexible. The next videos will probably be about mulching and putting on manure mats, and culling the leeks to leave room for the best ones.
