War Profiles: Gösta Benckert | The Indomitable Swede

In this episode of War Profiles, we look at Gösta Benckert, a Swedish officer who chose to fight first for Finland in the Winter War, and then for Norway during the German invasion of 1940. Sweden was neutral. Benckert did not have to fight. Yet when Norway was attacked, he turned south and went back into combat. Drawing on contemporary accounts, interviews, and memoirs, this episode follows Benckert from the frozen front lines of Lapland to the chaotic fighting around Kongsvinger and the Glomma River. It explores his leadership under pressure, the improvisation required to resist a superior enemy, and the heavy responsibility of command, including moments where discipline failed, with tragic consequences. Among those who served under him was Max Manus, who later described Benckert as both his role model and one of the most complete soldiers he had ever known.
