Chasiv Yar is referred to as the key to the Kramatorsk conglomeration. After the capture of Bakhmut, it became the next target for the Russians in their efforts to seize the entire Donetsk region, being located just 16 km from Kramatorsk—the main logistical hub for Ukrainian defenders in the eastern direction. In the spring of 2024, Russian troops came close to the city. The battle for Chasiv Yar began, and the once 14,000-strong settlement turned to ruins day by day under the strikes of Russian aviation and artillery. Chasiv Yar has a strategic location: it is situated on dominant heights. Additionally, the Siverskyi Donets–Donbas canal runs through the city, which has become a convenient fortification for Ukrainian defenders—crossing it is difficult for the Russians, so they attempt to advance from the flanks. In June, Ukrainian command decided to carry out a rotation in the city: they withdrew the 41st Brigade, which was exhausted from the fighting in Chasiv Yar, to a calmer sector near Toretsk, and sent the 24th Brigade, which had been defending Toretsk, to take their positions. This rotation, which the Russians took advantage of, led to rapid advances in Toretsk and New York. In Chasiv Yar, fighters from the 24th Brigade also engaged in counterattacks and had to set up a second defensive line simultaneously. In early July, it became known that Ukrainian troops had fallen back behind the canal. Although it is easier for infantry to hold the defense from that side of the canal, the Russians did not abandon their goal of capturing Chasiv Yar. "They're still far from crossing the canal," says company commander Bohdan, "but they try to carry out some actions every day with the aim of establishing themselves on the other side of the canal." Meanwhile, they are also destroying what remains of the city. "Chasiv Yar will be associated with its name—what it means that time has stopped there, and for some comrades, forever. The city is gone—just ruins, like Bakhmut, Toretsk, and others. They are demolishing everything," says infantryman Bohdan before heading to his positions to continue defending Chasiv Yar.
