Curare il cuore prima dell'emergenza: una necessità per i nostri genitori e nonni
What happens when age advances and the heart begins to lose its natural rhythm, without anyone having taken preventive measures beforehand? Often, we are reduced to intervening only after an acute event, when a simple early screening could have changed everything. Cardiac Screening and the Elderly: The Experts' Appeal Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of hospitalization and mortality in Italy, affecting the elderly population particularly severely. At the 19th National Congress of SIGOT (Italian Society of Hospital and Community Geriatrics), doctors made a clear appeal to institutions: it is necessary to fill the care gap by introducing primary prevention systems and free screening for those over 85, replicating the already effective models used in oncology, as Professor Francesco Vetta, Director of the Cardiology Unit and UTIC at Avezzano Hospital and Professor at Unicamillus University, explains. How can we prevent cardiac risks in the elderly? To prevent cardiovascular disease in those over 85, healthcare systems must implement early screening and targeted social and health care planning. Conditions such as ischemic heart disease and heart failure require close collaboration between cardiology and geriatrics to personalize care, reduce the risk of post-surgical infections, and properly manage patients in the community. The technological evolution of pacemakers: from the past to the rice-grain-shaped future The burden of older people on healthcare facilities is significant: the average age for a pacemaker implant is 81, and 74 for a defibrillator. People over 70 represent 8% of the population receiving electrostimulation, constituting a true critical mass. While there is still work to be done on an organizational level, bioengineering has made great strides. From the first device implanted in 1958 in Sweden, which lasted just 8 hours, today's devices last for over 13-15 years. The latest innovations include: Physiological stimulation: direct impulses along the heart's electrical conduction pathways for improved cardiac performance. Leadless devices: reduce complications such as infections, life-threatening sepsis, hematomas, and dislocations by over 60%, while also eliminating the aesthetic impact in the subclavian region. Extreme miniaturization: Future models will be smaller than a grain of rice and will communicate wirelessly with subcutaneous defibrillators for maximum safety. What do you think of this new healthcare guideline? Your opinion matters; let's discuss it in the comments. The SIGOT Congress calls for mandatory cardiac screening for the elderly, just like it is for cancer.
