The historic city of Champaner was founded in the 8th century by Vanraj Chavda, the most prominent king of the Chavda dynasty. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is one of the 114 monuments listed by the Baroda Heritage Trust. The Jami Masjid is located near the eastern gate, about 150 feet east of the city walls. Built in 1513, this mosque took over 25 years to construct. One of the most notable monuments built by Sultan Mahmud Begada, it is built in the Mughal architectural style. Mughal architecture is said to derive its influence from the Sultanate's architecture. It blends Jain elements with the craftsmanship of Muslim ethos. It is considered one of the finest mosques in Western India due to its beautiful interiors. The ornamentation on the facades of the mosque and tombs includes symbols and motifs of the sun, diamonds, vessels, vines, and lotuses, which were used in earlier temples. The craftsmen learned their art from their ancestors, who imparted knowledge of Hindu, Muslim, and Jain motifs.
