“Hai paura delle streghe?”, il femminismo oggi. | Monica Peruzzi | TEDxBrescia
How do we break down the stereotypes and prejudices that still shape the lives of half the population—women? Through words. Because words build the reality we live in. Take the word feminism, for example: it's a word that creates mistrust because for decades it has been associated with images of women that suggested a certain hatred of men, brutalized by the fight for rights. "Tremble, the witches are back," was the slogan of the 1970s. This time, the witches are back to explain why we should all become feminists: to build a world that stops normalizing violence against women, justifying perpetrators, and blaming victims, that frees women from the idea that "they were asking for it." A world that gives women economic power and confidence, to restore hope to our country. Words to build a more equal world. Because a more equal world is a better world for everyone. She began her journalism career at the daily newspaper La Nazione and is one of the most well-known female faces on Sky TG24. Throughout her career, she has told the stories of the most vulnerable, documenting issues of great social importance in the most remote corners of the planet. She covered the first free elections in Myanmar in 2015, collected testimonies of a wave of violence against disabled women in India, and was on the front lines during the Arab Spring and the war in Libya. She studied the effects of global warming before its full meaning was fully understood, and noted a strong connection between the environment and social vulnerability. On every journey, she encounters a segment of the population living on the margins of society, often women and girls. Poor among the poor. Marginalized among the marginalized. A reality common to all countries, even the richest. Hence her decision to dedicate herself to breaking down all forms of prejudice and discrimination, especially against women, addressing sensitive topics such as femicide. For her commitment to shedding light on the various aspects of gender-based violence, she won the Semplicemente Donna International Information Award in 2019. In 2022, he won the Ischia journalism award for sustainability, presented by Terna.
