Kinnaur Kailash Yatra 2026: Why Do Kinnaur Residents Want the Yatra Stopped? | News9 The Kinnaur Kailash Yatra, one of the most sacred pilgrimages in the Himalayas, has become the centre of a major controversy. Thousands of people have taken to the streets in Reckong Peo, Himachal Pradesh, demanding that the pilgrimage be stopped permanently—not because they oppose faith, but because they believe the fragile Himalayan ecosystem is under severe threat. Led by the Dev Samaj, protesters argue that although the district administration had officially suspended the yatra following earlier protests, the pilgrimage is continuing unofficially, resulting in an uncontrolled influx of devotees. According to the protesters, the growing number of visitors is polluting natural water sources, damaging rare medicinal plants, disturbing glaciers and putting immense pressure on one of India's most ecologically sensitive mountain regions. The controversy is also deeply spiritual. Local communities believe that the entire Kinnaur Kailash mountain is sacred, not just the revered Shivling. They allege that some pilgrims are climbing directly over the sacred Shivling, an act they describe as disrespectful to centuries-old traditions. The Himachal Pradesh government has said it will consult all stakeholders before taking a final decision.
