POVERE CREATURE, di YORGOS LANTHIMOS - LASCIAMI ANDARE, DIO. RECENSIONE DI GIOVANNI COVINI
POOR CREATURES, by YORGOS LANTHIMOS - LET ME GO, GOD. REVIEW BY GIOVANNI COVINI @IlCinemaDentroDiTe Source Wikipedia PLOT In Victorian London, Victoria, a young pregnant woman, kills herself by jumping into the Thames. Some time later, the outgoing medical student Max McCandles is invited by the eccentric surgeon Godwin Baxter to collaborate on an experiment. He is asked to assist Bella, a girl with very childish behavior, with whom he quickly falls in love. Intrigued by her strange behavior, however, Max corners Baxter, who reveals the truth: after recovering Victoria's body, he had implanted the brain of the surviving fetus, thus creating a "new" girl. Bella progresses rapidly and demonstrates a strong libido, which she releases through autoeroticism and the search for a sexual partner. Dr. Baxter then decides to marry her to Max, but when he invites the womanizing lawyer Duncan Wedderburn to the estate to draw up the contract, Bella, driven by her desire to see the world, runs away with him, after receiving Godwin's approval, who does not want to deprive her of her free will. Together with Duncan, Bella explores her sexuality and Europe, starting in Lisbon. When the young woman's behavior becomes increasingly rebellious, unconventional, and unsuitable for Duncan's usual social circles, he puts her on a cruise ship. During the voyage, she meets Martha and Harry, who introduce her to philosophy, much to the lawyer's chagrin. In Alexandria, Harry shows Bella the poverty and social inequality that plague the world, and she decides to donate all of Duncan's winnings at the gambling tables to the poor. Unable to afford the cruise, the two are dropped off in Marseille and from there they travel to Paris, where they find themselves penniless. Bella then begins working at the brothel run by Madame Swiney, and for Duncan, long troubled by his lover's eccentricity and thirst for freedom, this is the final straw: he suffers a nervous breakdown and returns to London with some money that Baxter had left Bella in the hem of a dress, should she need it. During her time as a prostitute, Bella learns more and more about the world and its people, thanks in part to her friend and colleague Toinette, who introduces her to socialism. Meanwhile, Baxter has begun rehabilitating another girl similar to Bella, Felicity, most likely the product of the same experiment with which he revived Bella, and is suffering from terminal cancer. At his and Max's invitation, Bella returns to London, reconciles with her creator, and, while deciding to pursue a career as a doctor, agrees to marry Max. However, the wedding is interrupted by the arrival of General Alfie Blessington, who, in Bella's previous life, had been Victoria's husband. Duncan, who had been investigating Victoria out of revenge, sought him out and informed him. Intrigued by her supposed ex-husband and always eager for new experiences, Bella agrees to return home with him, abandoning Max once again. However, she quickly realizes that it was her husband's tyrannical and authoritarian nature that had driven her to suicide. After overhearing a conversation in which Alfie orders the doctor to mutilate her genitals to stifle her explosive sexuality, Bella rebels against the man, who injures his foot in the fight. With Max's help, Alfie is neutralized, and to prevent him from going to the police, his brain is switched with that of a goat. Bella returns to Baxter's estate and, after the doctor's death, settles there with Max, Felicity, and Toinette.
