This branch started with Ogasawara Nagakyo, the second son of Kagami Jirō Tōmitsu, himself great grandson of Shinra Saburō Yoshimitsu (also known as Minamoto no Yoshimitsu. At the age of 26, Ogasawara Nagakyo became Shihan for Minamoto no Yoritomo, and the position was kept in the family for generations. The school developed the practice of Yabusame (mounted archery), with exercises such as Ōmato, Momote and Kusajishi. Later, the tradition was protected by the following generations until the Tokugawa era. At that time, the seventeenth master Tsugunao was invited by Tokugawa Ieyasu and became himself Shihan of Tokugawa Hidetada. The Ogasawara family continued to be part of the aristocratic elite until the Meiji restoration, as Shihan responsible for the ancient traditions of mounted archery.
