In this episode, Father Recktenwald tells of a crisis of faith that didn't originate with atheists—but rather in the midst of Catholic religious education. A teacher explains that God as creator is an "outdated concept of God." Jesus didn't want to found a church. The miracles are legends. The Eucharist is merely a symbol of human love. And suddenly, everything is called into question for a young Catholic. Did Christ really rise from the dead? Did Jesus intend for the Church to exist? Is the Eucharist truly his presence? Or was the entire faith just a religious construct? Father Recktenwald describes the intellectual atmosphere of the 1970s—a time when many young people lost their faith not despite, but because of, their theological training. Particularly disturbing: He witnesses two priests giving completely opposite answers to the same question. One says: “That’s heresy.” The other: “Yes, that’s exactly it.” The episode shows how deep the post-Vatican II crisis had already become in many places—and how lonely young believers could become who simply wanted to practice their Catholic faith. And yet, something else begins right here. Amidst doubt, confusion, and inner turmoil, Father Recktenwald discovers a small circle of young Catholics who pray together, talk about faith, and take faith seriously. For the first time, he experiences: Faith is not dead. Christ is real. And perhaps God himself is calling him. The Ignatian retreat of 1977 becomes a turning point. A simple question slowly transforms into a life-changing decision: “If God truly exists—why shouldn’t I give him my whole life?” An episode about loss of faith, the search for truth, vocation — and the question of how to preserve faith when even church authorities shake it.
