Hand-assembling medical devices under a microscope is one of the most demanding fine dexterous tasks in manufacturing. A millimetre of difference in a stitch can mean the difference between a product being approved or rejected. Until recently, the only way to assess the physical risk to the people performing that task was observation and trained operator judgement. In this webinar, Dr Charles MacLeod covers how PPS measures pressure and force at the fingertip and across the hand, from single fingertip FingerTPS sensors to the 65-element TactileGlove, and how that data supports hand activity level (HAL) assessment using the NIOSH framework. Examples include tool handle design, power tool ergonomics, and adhesive application tools in aerospace manufacturing. Evelyne Boulay, Director of Environmental Health and Safety at Edwards Lifesciences, then shares how her team has used FingerTPS to quantify finger force during the manual assembly of heart valve components. The session covers how this data has driven workstation redesign, secured engineering investment, reduced employee injury rates, and contributed to an Ergo Cup Award for the team's ergonomic risk assessment process.
