The guarana plant (Paullinia cupana, variety sorbilis (Martius) Duke) is native to the Amazon and produces the fruit known as guarana. It is a shrubby, climbing plant species of the Sapindaceae family, whose name comes from the indigenous term "varana," meaning a tree that climbs supported by another. Initially cultivated in the Amazon by the Maués Indians, in Bahia it is grown in the southern part of the state, making it the largest producer in the country. Its cultivation is of great socio-economic importance to the region because it is carried out by smallholders and is a typical family farming activity. The cultivated area in Bahia is 8,000 hectares, with a production of 2,600 tons and an average productivity exceeding 500 kg/ha, compared to less than 300 kg/ha in the producing regions of the Amazon. The productivity of plantations in Bahia is much higher, since the region has more favorable conditions for plant development, with good rainfall distribution throughout the year, more fertile soils, and a low incidence of diseases such as anthracnose, in addition to using technologies developed by researchers at Ceplac.
