Annie ZAVAGNO - La formation des étoiles

Live broadcast from UPOP Marseille September 11, 2023 - 7 PM Live from Marseille City Hall (1/7 district) Interstellar Filaments: Hosts of Star Formation – In galaxies, star formation takes place in filaments made up of gas (mainly hydrogen) and small solid particles called interstellar dust. Understanding star formation requires studying these filaments, which host star formation and constitute the matter from which stars are born. “I will present these filamentary structures as they are observed from the ground and from space, and studied using numerical simulations. I will discuss their link to star formation and show how machine learning offers very promising prospects for their study. I will conclude by presenting some upcoming observational studies, placing them in the context of the questions still being asked in this field of research.” Annie Zavagno is an astrophysicist at the Marseille Astrophysics Laboratory and a senior member of the Institut Universitaire de France. She is a professor at Aix-Marseille University. After completing her PhD in astrophysics at Paris Diderot University (1993) and a postdoctoral fellowship in Rome, she specialized in studying the feedback effects of massive stars on their environment. She is currently interested in the numerical modeling of these feedback effects and is exploring the contribution of deep learning to the study of galactic star formation.
