The breakthrough classical work of Estonian composer Erkki-Sven Tüür, commissioned by the Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra. The images at the beginning and end of the video are of the composers home island, Hiiumaa. The title could be translated as desert island or deserted island and possibly refers to it - a relatively sparsely populated landmass. Tüür has stated that his work is often concerned between intellectual and emotional energy and refers to his pieces as dramas in sound, unfolding in an expanding, contracting and shifting space. He is interested in the juxtaposition of opposites: tonality vs atonality, repetitive rhythms vs complex rhythms and bridging the opposites. Timbre is an equally important aspect to this space and drama.
