Estupor y temblores de Amèlie Nothomb | Reseña y lectura de fragmentos
In this video, I discuss my reading of the short novel "Stupor and Tremors" (Anagrama, 2020) by the Belgian writer Amélie Nothomb, born in Kobe in 1966. This short novel tells the story of a young Belgian woman named Amélie, who begins working at Yumimoto, a Japanese multinational corporation located in Tokyo. There, she undergoes a revelatory experience, discovering another side of Japanese culture and experiencing firsthand the harshness of hierarchy, the degradation and power of censorship, and the roles of power within the company's organization. The relationship with the beautiful Mori Fubuki, whom I awkwardly call Fabuki until I read the excerpt, serves as the center of this unruly plot, full of absurd and fascinating events, told from Amélie's perspective, mordant, eccentric, and moving.
