That's when cult justifies culture.” — Mateus Aleluia Speaking about the alliances and confluences between Indigenous and African peoples, Ailton Krenak and Mateus Aleluia reflect on people, orixás, voduns, and enchanted beings who insist on dancing, even after centuries of attempts at erasure. They discuss how the gradual achievement of the right to exist in one’s own language, to tell one’s own history, and to reactivate memories cauterized by coloniality goes hand in hand with the strength of encounters between cultures and cosmovisions which, like waters flowing from different springs, come together without canceling one another out, forming a great river moving toward life. ___________ AILTON KRENAK is a thinker, environmentalist, and one of the leading voices of Indigenous knowledge in Brazil. Together with Dantes Editora, he created Selvagem, cycle of studies about life. He lives in the Krenak village on the banks of the Doce River, in Minas Gerais. He is the author of several books, including "Ideas to Postpone the End of the World" (Companhia das Letras, 2019) and "One River One Bird" (Dantes Editora, 2023). In 2022, he was elected to the Brazilian Academy of Letters. MATEUS ALELUIA LIMA, born of and shaped by Cachoeira, Bahia, is a singer, composer, and researcher of Brazil’s pan-African musical ancestry. Together with Dadinho, he helped shape the artistic and ideological profile of the group Tincoãs. Continuing his artistic journey, he released the albums Cinco Sentidos (Five Senses), Fogueira Doce (Sweet Bonfire), Olorum, and Afrocanto das Nações (Afro-Chant of the Nations), which, along with the work of Tincoãs, are regarded as milestones of Afro-Brazilian culture. ___________ WATER CYCLE is a cycle of studies in which we delve into reflections on water, the element that generates, sustains, and connects all life on the planet.
