Assange bekennt sich schuldig: Das steckt hinter dem Deal mit den USA | ZDFheute live
Julian Assange has made a deal with the US: The Wikileaks founder is to plead guilty to espionage in a US court and be sentenced to more than five years in prison. The time Assange spent in a maximum-security prison in Great Britain would be credited to this sentence. This would spare him extradition – despite the US judiciary's long insistence on it. A prison sentence in the US would also inevitably be off the table. Assange would be free. His wife confirmed the agreement. Her husband will plead guilty to one count related to the US Espionage Act, Stella Assange told the BBC. The trial will not take place on the US mainland, but in a remote territory in the Western Pacific, the Northern Mariana Islands. The territory lies north of Australia, his home country, where Assange is scheduled to travel afterward. The US accuses Assange of stealing and publishing classified material from military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan with whistleblower Chelsea Manning, thereby endangering the lives of US informants. Assange's supporters, however, believe he is being targeted by the Washington judiciary for exposing US war crimes. What are the consequences of the Assange deal with the US? What does the agreement mean for whistleblowers? Why is the US waiving extradition? ZDFheute will discuss this live with Washington correspondent Heike Slansky and human rights lawyer Wolfgang Kaleck. ---- 00:00 Intro and Welcome 02:04 Human rights lawyer Wolfgang Kaleck on the Assange case 07:34 The Assange case in chronology 08:58 ZDF correspondent Heike Slansky with assessments from Washington 15:14 What are the consequences of the deal with the US?
