Appropriate, maybe, here in the midst of Winter. My little arrangement of Tchaikovsky‘s Barcarolle and its video is a tribute to and love for the aesthetics of the great early 20th Century guitar tradition ignited by Tarrega. Its aesthetics seems too often to be lost in our modern lives, distracted by glory hunting and an egocentric media frenzy. As Segovia once said: "I have sworn to walk in the steps of the sainted Francisco Tarrega, who lived and died for his beloved instrument with little hope of glory or gain". This guitar arrangement does not seek to compete with the original piano version. It is trying to do justice to the evocations and feelings behind the written notes by using sound possibilities inherent to the guitar, which for Tarrega and Segovia was the reason to play the guitar and not the piano. It is important to stress that the arrangement is to be found as much in the fingerings as in the notes themselves. The instrument I used for this recording, a 2020 Steven den Toom guitar, I felt was the ideal palette to paint this homage to Tarrega’s legacy through it’s rich golden colours, striving to the same ideal of beauty as the old guitar tradition. Without this guitar, I would probably not have had the last spark of inspiration to make “June” come to life in this video."
