Yes, I did it too! One of the most iconic and challenging climbs in Italy, ridden by numerous cycling champions past and present: the Stelvio. Now I can say, in my own small way, that I accomplished this feat, providing me with moments of intense emotion. Not only that, but also views of rare beauty. I set out from Silandro in Val Venosta to take the Claudia Augusta cycle path, partly paved and partly dirt, immersed in endless fields of apple orchards. I turned off towards Prato allo Stelvio, where the climb, the scene of feats by great champions, begins. From this side, there is a 23 km climb with an average gradient of 7.5%, with 48 hairpin bends until reaching the Cima Coppi at 2,758 meters above sea level. This is a more difficult climb than the climb from Bormio or Santa Maria Val Müstair in Switzerland. Today was Stelvio Bike Day 2024: traffic was prohibited on all three routes leading to the pass. Numerous enthusiasts took advantage of the opportunity to tackle this challenging climb, challenging themselves. Upon reaching the summit, admiring the breathtaking views and glacier-covered peaks, I took advantage of a short break to refuel and hydrate after the hard work. I changed jerseys and descended headlong to Santa Maria Val Müstair in Switzerland, first passing the Umbrail Pass at 2,500 meters above sea level. I took a short break to admire this delightful Swiss village in the canton of Graubünden. I returned to Italy and headed to Glorenza, a medieval village of rare beauty, the smallest in South Tyrol. After visiting it, I took the Claudia Agusta cycle path back to Silandro, where I could enjoy a refreshing dip in the pool. What a satisfaction!
