Peiwen sat down with multi-Grammy award-winning jazz virtuoso Gonzalo Rubalcaba in his studio in Miami, Florida, for an in-depth conversation. He discussed his music education in Cuba, how he was discovered by Dizzy Gillespie and signed to Blue Note Records, how he has been influenced by Stravinsky and other classical music composers, and what goes through his mind as he improvises on the keyboard. In this first part of the interview, Gonzalo talks about how he decided to learn the drums and classical piano when he was a young boy in Cuba, his early musical influences, and more.
