2009 National Championship Boys Race

Lukas Verzbicas from Orland Hills, Il. won the 2009 FootLock Cross Country Championship in a time of 15:08, on a wet and sloppy course. This race was held at Morley Field in Balboa Park in San Diego, California on December 12, 2009. Lukas won the 2009 and 2010 Footlocker National XC Championships as well as the 2010 NXN XC National Championship (the first to double both National HS XC championships in the same year). Also, Lukas won 3 National HS indoor titles in the 5000m, 2 mile, and mile... the first high school athlete to win all 3. Lukas set a national high school record in the 2-mile (8:29:46) at the 2011 Prefontaine Classic in Oregon. Also, he became the 5th high schooler to break the 4:00 barrier in the mile at the Adidas Dream Mile (3:59:71). In 2011, Verzbicas won the Pan American Junior Triathlon championships as well as the ITU World Junior Championships in Beijing. There is no debate that Lukas Verzbicas is without a doubt one of the best high school track/xc athletes of all time! A significant back injury in 2012, while training for triathlons, derailed his huge aspirations in future collegiate, amateur, and professional competitions.
