Valleyfair is a large amusement park in Shakopee, Minnesota, located about 25 miles southwest of Minneapolis. It opened on May 25, 1976 and originally featured 20 rides on 26 acres of land; today it has grown to around 90 acres with more than 75 rides and attractions, including eight roller coasters and a full water park called Soak City included with admission. Over the decades, the park has become one of the Upper Midwest’s most popular destinations for family fun, offering everything from classic carousels and family rides to high-thrill coasters and seasonal events. Throughout its history Valleyfair has expanded and updated its lineup of attractions. Early highlights included the classic wooden coaster High Roller, which opened with the park in 1976, and the steel looping Corkscrew added in 1980. Later marquee attractions include Wild Thing, a tall hypercoaster known for its long first drop, and Renegade, a modern wooden coaster with a twisting first drop and station fly-by. The water park Soak City began in the 1980s and has continued to grow with slides, wave pools, and lazy rivers that provide a cool complement to the dry rides. Valleyfair isn’t just about rides — it also hosts seasonal special events and themed celebrations, and features extensive offerings for younger guests, such as the Planet Snoopy kids’ area themed around the Peanuts characters. While the park traditionally operates from May through October, it has also embraced seasonal additions like Halloween festivities. Over the years it’s been part of major amusement park company portfolios, including Cedar Fair and, following a 2024 corporate merger, Six Flags, helping it to remain a cornerstone of Minnesota’s outdoor entertainment scene.
