Teacher Jamie Varley has been given a whole life prison sentence for the murder and sexual abuse of his adopted 13-month-old son, Preston Davey. The court heard Preston suffered prolonged physical, sexual and emotional abuse before his death in 2023. Varley’s partner, John McGowan-Fazakerley, was jailed for 25 years for child cruelty, sexual assault and allowing the child’s death. Police described the pair as “evil”, while a safeguarding review is now underway.
