Fugitive Mafia boss bagged in Brazil after 25 years on the run
Italian Mafia boss Rocco Morabito was on the run for 25 years, living in comfort, unbothered by his status as one of the world’s most-wanted fugitives. But his run is finally over this week. Let me tell you about it. The Mob Reporter here with news this week of the triumphant extradition of a big boss of the ‘Ndrangheta, that’s the Mafia of Italy’s southern region of Calabria, who was hauled back to Italy from where he fled decades before. It’s been quite a trip, filled with exotic travel, daring escapes, false identities, power, corruption and lies. Morabito’s decades on the run came to an end on July 6, 2022, when a police guard escorted him through the streets of Brazil to an airport, where a plane from Italy was waiting. Although he was sentenced to 30 years in prison in Italy in the 1990s, authorities never got him behind those bars. He fled to the ritzy seaside resort town in Uruguay called Punta del Este, nicknamed Beverly Hills. While on the run, he was the subject of an Interpol Red Notice, but continued coordinating transatlantic operations for the ‘Ndrangheta, authorities say. Morabito struck lucrative deals in South America, with Colombian cartels and with El Primer Comando de la Capital, known as PCC. He brought coke to Europe by the ton and police declared him a top international broker. He was arrested in Montevideo, Uruguay, in 2017. Morabito escaped 1,142 days later. It took police two years to find him again. When authorities caught up to him a second time, he was in northern Brazil. It was May 2021, after another international manhunt. And now he is back in his homeland. ** Thanks for watching. And please subscribe. Turn on notifications with the bell icon. And join me on Patreon for bonus content and perks.
