Dutchware Hellbender vs Warbonnet Blackbird XLC

Two close but very different contenders in the world of cottage gear hammocks are pitted against each other in this comparison video. The Warbonnet Outdoors Blackbird XLC (Gen 2) modular hammock and its accompanying Wooki directionally laid under quilt in a 40 degree Fahrenheit configuration offers flexibility through various temperatures and seasons, but is showing its age. A newly anticipated third generation of the Blackbird XLC is coming in the near future, according to Warbonnet’s website. The relative newcomer to the hammock foray is the Hellbender hammock by Dutchware Gear. This hammock is locked into one temperature, one direction, and one of two top cover options when you configure your hammock at time of purchase. You can still add additional under quilts for lower temperature seasons of use, but that’s about it. It’s a lighter weight & simplified version of the modular quilted Chameleon hammock from Dutchware Gear. Weight-wise and price-wise, these two hammock configurations are very similar. There’s about a $41 difference for the 40 degree configuration, and about 4 & a half ounces of weight difference between them. This is excluding any organizers or suspensions, which can vary immensely by personal choice. The spreader bar hoop atop the Hellbender’s bug netting opens up the lay of the hammock and keeps the netting off of your face. The XLC feels more snug against your body and shoulders. For folks with shoulder issues, the Hellbender may make for a more comfortable night’s sleep.
