Legal battle continues over Lungu's remains
This as the Lungu family is turning to the appellate court in a bid to appeal the August 2025 Gauteng High Court in Pretoria's full bench judgment that found that the Zambian government is entitled to repatriate the remains of Lungu for the purposes of a State funeral and a burial. The Lungu family - who argue that that the SCA may reach a different conclusion on the matter - hold the view that the burial of a loved one is one of the most personal and intimate spheres of a family's affairs, in which the state may not interfere. The Zambian government opposes this bid and holds on to their contention that an agreement was concluded between the Lungu family on the 14th of June 2025 that Lungu should be repatriated to his homeland of Zambia for the purposes of a State funeral and burial.
