(July 2025) Takeoff from : runway 18R at SHA + runway 18 at YYA Landing at : runway 18 at YYA + runway 02L at CTU Seat number : 15A Taken on : 20th July 2024 Filmed with : Iphone 12 PRO MAX, Canon SX540HS, GoPro Hero 9 Conclusion : Last summer, I took an aviation-themed trip across China and had the chance to fly several rare aircraft — including the ARJ21-700, now rebranded as the COMAC C909. This was my first time flying a Chinese-made aircraft, operated by Chengdu Airlines on a route from Shanghai Hongqiao to Chengdu Shuangliu, with a stopover in Yueyang. I checked in online via the Chinese app 航旅纵横. It worked well but only supports Chinese ID or travel documents. I selected seat 15A for free. Chengdu Airlines doesn’t offer business class on the C909, but they do have a small premium economy section for an extra 400¥. At Hongqiao, Chengdu Airlines uses China Eastern’s check-in desks. Bag drop was quick, and I had a fast-track pass for security, which saved time. I spent a while plane spotting — highlights included Air China’s 747-400 and two 747-8s parked side by side, a rare sight! I also spotted a C919 in China Eastern colors, which I flew later during the trip. Boarding was by bus due to the small aircraft size and was delayed slightly due to late arrival of the aircraft. Today’s aircraft, B-603P, wore a special “Chinese Dream” livery. A security guard monitored boarding, which is common practice in China. The cabin has a 2-3 layout — like the A220, but the feel reminded me more of a CRJ900. My seat, 15A, was behind the wing. It was reasonably comfortable, but legroom was tight and the tray table seems broken. There were personal air vents, and the seat has recline. The cabin noise was high in the rear due to proximity to the engines — not ideal for everyone, but great for avgeeks. A hot meal was served after takeoff with plastic cutlery — I chose the fried chicken noodles, which were tasty. Only bottled water was offered to drink. Chengdu Airlines is considered a low-cost carrier, though the service felt closer to full-service. We landed in Yueyang after about 1h45 and stayed on board during the stop. On the second leg, biscuits and more water were served. The flight to Chengdu took around 90 minutes, arriving early. Again, we parked at a remote stand, and I spotted a Tibet Airlines A319neo during the bus ride — another aircraft I flew later. To my surprise, my bag was already waiting at baggage claim — very efficient! Overall, the C909 flight was enjoyable. While the aircraft feels a bit dated compared to newer jets, it wasn’t bad at all. I paid around 1660¥, which was reasonable.
