Hello, how can one not be concerned about the abandonment of one of the few glacial ski areas in France equipped for skiing? For several years, the restructuring project for the Bellecôte sector and its Chiaupe and Bellecôte glaciers has been under consideration. The decision has been made, and the chosen plan is very restrictive for high-altitude skiing, particularly regarding access to the numerous off-piste routes. In this film, which is not intended to be controversial, I offer the perspective of a professional skier, specializing in freeriding for many years, and discuss the consequences of the transformation of the Bellecôte dome area. I address the historical context that led to the creation of this gondola lift and the two existing chairlifts, and then I detail the five proposals developed to address the necessary modifications to this lift. I'm discussing the process that initially involves the study (public inquiry, institutional, private, and public stakeholders, impact assessment, etc.) and then leads to the decision-making process. Finally, the environmental aspect and climate change provide another perspective and complete this overview. Many questions come to mind after these long weeks of work on this video. The first is certainly the lack of consultation with ski professionals (guides and instructors) specializing in high-mountain terrain. But also, what are the true motivations of the decision-makers? Are they working solely in the interest of skiers, with respect for the mountains and the environment, or are the only factors influencing their decisions economic? As you've probably gathered, this is a challenging film that required extensive research (you can consult my sources, which I've included in the description), and it raises the question of the long-term viability of off-piste skiing in the high mountains of major resorts managed by Compagnie des Alpes.
