The route moves from steep city cuttings into the rolling hills above Tawa and Porirua before settling into a calmer rhythm. North of Porirua, the highway enters the Horokiri Valley, whose name can be interpreted as “the falling bark”, a reference to tōtara and other native trees that once shed bark across the valley floor. The steep ridgelines and enclosed curves still carry that sense of an older, forested landscape. Beyond Pāuatahanui, the scenery widens into farmland and coastal plains before the expressway leads smoothly toward Waikanae, framed by glimpses of Kāpiti Island and the long straight lines of the coast.
