A realtor's Tour of Lucca in Tuscany Italy

This is a 4 kilometer ring around the city that's on top of a medieval wall built in the 1600s for protection, and it's now a city park, beloved by locals and tourists alike, cyclists, joggers, runners, people just hanging out in the park benches, enjoying the sights. It's always very busy up here for good reason. And so I'm just strolling around getting a feel for the city. We'll go over to an apartment next to see if it's a match. So I’m standing in front of this apartment I'm about to go take a look at. We're just waiting for the realtor to show up. This is a little bit above my price range, but I've decided Lucca is worth it. It's about €278,000, only one bedroom and one bathroom. It's on the top floor, which I kind of like because there are skylights. It's a really beautiful little place right in the city center. Let's see if I like it. Because the apartment is on the top floor, it has eye-catching exposed wooden beams on the vaulted ceilings at a 45° angle throughout most of the property. This terracotta vaulting is a technique found in many traditional Italian homes in the Tuscan region and uses thin interlocking terracotta tiles and mortar to create strong self-supporting arches and vaults. The apartment is advertised as being large and bright, but as you can see, the windows are quite small. However, this is typical for a top floor apartment in the historic districts of Italy. All in all, this apartment shows that Lucca is not an inexpensive place to buy property, especially if you want to be within the famous Lucca walls. When I come back to town, I will look at some properties outside the wall for comparison. The bedroom and bathroom are nicely appointed and surprisingly roomy considering the entire place is only 60 square meters, about 650 SQ ft. On the bright side, this apartment comes fully furnished and can be rented out short-term or long-term at the new owner's discretion. A small utility room completes the picture, and there's also an extra room in the basement for storage that we didn't get in to see. No tour of Lucca would be complete without seeing the Torre Guinigi, a tower built in the 1300s and featuring home oak trees at the very top that are hundreds of years old. I climbed the Tower in Florence and that was 414 steps. This tower is a mere 230 steps, but still challenging to walk to the top and it's well worth it when you get there. So I'm here on a very special night in Lucca. I'm here at the Duomo of St. Martino. Tonight is the procession of the Iluminari of St. Croce. They start on one end of town and they go down a procession where they end up over here in this side of town in the San Martino Piazza. And it's absolutely gorgeous because all the lights go out and the whole town is lit by candles and small lights. While the procession makes its way with period costumes, it's going to be quite the sight. I'm going to try to get the video later. But this is absolutely gorgeous church here. I want to go share this with you. So, that concludes my time here in Lucca. I've spent two nights and saw one apartment. It was very hard to get into any others. So, I'm going to have to come back here. I've pretty much decided I want to be in Lucca and just need to find the right place and come back and spend some more time here. Okay, till next time.
