There's something wrong with most advice on quitting doomscrolling: it assumes the problem is that it's a waste of time or highly addictive, when in reality it's more complex than that. In this video, I found a 2026 paper that indicates that the amount of time we spend on our phones isn't as relevant as the reason we scroll. Understanding this is key to finding a replacement and reducing our dependence on our phones. But we have to become aware of these needs, or they'll persist.
