Istiklal Street is the busiest street in Istanbul. And, every single day and night, in both summer and winter, on any hour of the day you can always see a flood of both locals and tourists here. It is situated within the district of Beyoglu, formerly called Pera, which is the center of arts and culture. Istiklal Street runs all the way from the Taksim Square, northern end, and ends at the Tunel Square, southern end, which leads to Galipdede Street and than to famous Galata Mevlevihanesi (Dervish Lodge) with its historic gate and if you go further downhill, to famous Galata Tower. On the half way, there is a break on the Galatarasay square. The Taksim Square is a cosmopolitan one, also a communications hub and an important commercial, entertainment and sightseeing area for both locals and tourists in Istanbul. Taksim Square is also a popular meeting point and ideal place to have a nice Istanbul city walking tour from Taksim. Many popular tourist places like restaurants, pubs, bars and cafes, sights, museums are situated along the square. Taksim square, with its location leading to the monument, Gezi park, domed church of Aya Triada, nostalgic tram, Huseyin Aga Mosque and famous Istiklal Street, is the most popular square in Istanbul as well as in Turkey. It is just like the famous ones in the Europen countries. The Galata Tower is believed to have been constructed in the year 1348. It is also known that the first tower was constructed closer to the sea with the order of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian in 528. But it was demolished by the Latin Crusaders. On the 14th century, in 1348, it was the Genoese, who had a semi-independence from the Byzantines constructed a gorgeous tower on the site and called the Tower of Christ, and it also had been part of their fortification. Galata Tower also has an important story and event from the year 1638 that; according to Evliya Celebi, a renowned Ottoman historian and traveler, a man named Hezarfen Ahmet Celebi managed to fly from the Galata Tower’s top (European side) to the Uskudar coast (Asian side) with a home-made artificial wings. And this flight is considered to be the first intercontinental flight in the world. After the flight, in order to reward Hezarfen Ahmet Celebi, Sultan Murad IV sent him to exile in Algeria. :) Karaköy is located right in front of the old town, near the Galata Bridge and down the famous Tower of the same name. It covers an area from the banks of the Golden Horn to the Bosphorus. The first traces of urbanization dates back to the Byzantine Empire, it is therefore one of the most historical and important places of the city. It is still a condensed of Istanbul with different populations living close to each other. A whole new population of young people of Istanbul is now meeting there for a coffee or to work in the many shared office concepts. It’s a little residential area in which life unfolds quietly its the charming terraces. Karaköy is also currently one of the best places to be in Istanbul at night. The weekends evenings it is lively and perfect for partying until dawn in clubs like Mitte, Goya or Colony.
