When Vesuvius buried Pompeii, it froze its people at the instant of death, and the plaster casts made from the cavities they left behind became the most human images in all of archaeology. A mother curled around her child. Two sisters locked in a final embrace. We have wept over them for more than a century. In 2024, scientists finally read the ancient DNA trapped inside those casts — and the tender stories fell apart. The "mother" cradling a child in the House of the Golden Bracelet was genetically male; in fact all four bodies in that "family" were male, and not one of them was biologically related to the others. The two "sisters" weren't sisters, and at least one was a man. The genders and the family bonds we had been certain of for 150 years simply weren't there in the bones. The people who died at Pompeii also turned out to be strikingly cosmopolitan, carrying ancestry from across the eastern Mediterranean — a melting-pot Roman port, not the quiet Italian town we pictured.
